Options for Contesting Your Annual Performance Appraisal

As an employee of the University, you have the right to contest your annual appraisal if you disagree with the scores or content (HOP 5-2310). Although you have the right to use any and all of the below methods, we recommend that you start with the least formal option (option 1) and move towards the more formal options if you are still unsatisfied with the result.

  1. You may set up a meeting with your immediate supervisor to discuss your points of contention in your appraisal.

  • During this meeting you can ask for your score to be reconsidered and provide your reasoning.

  • You may also ask your supervisor if they would be open to mediation via the Staff Ombuds.

  1. You may write a response explaining your disagreement, which will be attached to your annual appraisal in your personnel file.

Please note: Anyone who has access to view the appraisal will also see your response (e.g. your management chain and university hiring departments).

  1. You may request a meeting with your 2nd-level supervisor to discuss your annual appraisal concerns.

  • Send an email to your supervisor’s supervisor, requesting a meeting and 2nd-tier review of your appraisal.
  1. You have the right to file a formal Grievance with the Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution Office.

  • This process must be initiated within 10 business days of receiving your annual appraisal, and can be done via phone, email, or online.
